-Introduction-
Music is a clear indication of identity in a specified time period. Through
musical analysis one can derive the social values, expressions, distinctions
of a particular era. Furthermore, music illustrates the perpetual variances
of social identifications within forever changing ages. This concept of
eternal modification can be perceived in a review of popular music over
three dissenting generations. However the question arises what is popular
music? Who denotes the classification of such eras? In the paper assigned,
the student is presented with the challenge to identify and explain the
contentions existing among three musical tastes in three discordant
generations. Moreover, the objective continues to inquire how these clashing
expressions reflect upon the "ethnic identification", whether these musical
interludes associate themselves with the mass production of standard
American culture, or follow suit with an "ethnic", varied (sub) culture.
These questions will attempt to be answered as three different songs from my
mother, my grandfather, and myself, all at age 20, are analyzed and
discussed in terms of chronological social identity and its references.
Before comprehending this review one must consider the era of each
composition and the context upon which it holds itself. This may be done by
a brief account of historical testament of each specified time period in
observance. I will begin this discussion with my grandfather, Dr. Milton
Torres, and his favorite song at the age of twenty- "As Time Goes By", by
Nat King Cole.
-Conclusion-
Music has
made incredible leaps within the past centuries with the media stigma
altering the image associated with American culture. By this analysis of
three generations, one can see music's relation to social values and the
vacillation which occurs by each shifting year. At its present, music is
varied, multi-scoped, and dictates fashion, speech, and social
classification. It is a measure upon which individuals are prejudiced, and
given merit. Historical events along with life experiences of each
personality must be taken into account when considering reasons for favoring
a musical composition in a particular time period. Without this
consideration, the deriving factors are undeclared and in depth analysis
will present findings inconclusive. In 2002, an integration of ethnic, sub
culture has emerged and the American world identity is no longer a binary
opposite, but a pluralistic character which must be understood within its
context. There is no universal measurement for the language of music, it is
simply, to each his own.
